The soon to be President of the U.S. Mr. Barack Obama and his Vice President Mr. Joseph Biden, are both on record as being against the basic principles behind the Second Amendment. They have both forwarded and/or supported legislation at either the state or federal level to ban, curtail, tax, or otherwise limit citizens rights to keep and bear arms. Coupled with a Democratic Congress which is led in both houses by like minded individuals, this can lead to further erosion of this very important right.
These elected officials feel it important, nay necessary to disarm the civilian population of this country, much the same way other countries have done. This is being attempted despite statistical data that unequivocally PROVES that disarming a free society of its' ability to effectively defend itself against violence, brings increased violence against those who would follow the law.
The information contained within this site will prove beyond doubt that the Second Amendment and its' principle of the right of the people to keep and bear arms is a sound method of domestic security and does not cause increased violence. Quite to the contrary, when citizens are able to carry firearms (i.e. handguns), it is shown that violent crime decreases. This despite any differences for population density, economic conditions, or other factors.
Please take some time to download and read the information presented on this site. For those who are currently pro Second Amendment, this will help bolster your argument to preserve it. For those who are either on the fence about gun control or against it, I would ask that you read this information with an open mind. Do further research for yourself, and look at both sides of this argument without using pure emotions. When looked at objectively, there can be no other conclusion BUT to preserve and protect one of our most precious rights in this country.
Our Forefathers thought long and hard on this issue and did not enter into their decision lightly. They knew the best way to preserve the ability to defend one's liberty was to allow the private citizen to continue to have the right to own and carry firearms. They felt so strongly about this that they felt it was not a privilege they could actually grant under the Constitution. they felt it was an unalienable right that was given to all men by their God and that neither they, nor any governmental agency could rightly infringe upon it. The wording of the Second Amendment is as follows:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
This right was written into the Bill of Rights by a fear that the federal government would disarm the people in order to impose rule through a standing army or select militia, since history had shown taking away the people's arms and making it an offense for people to keep them was the way tyrants eliminated resistance to suppression of political opponents. In fact, history since our Constitution was written has proven the same to be true. Many a totalitarian or dictatorial government has imposed this rule - to disarm the general public - in order to gain and retain more power over them.
We must be ever vigilant in our pursuit of freedom. We must remember that freedom is NEVER free, and that those who would control us and gain more power are always looking for ways to hinder our rights. We must hold in our thoughts, the millions of men and women who have given their lives defending our rights and freedoms. To allow these freedoms to be taken away by our own government would amount to saying all of those who died in war died in vain.
